It was back in 1999 that this sleek Conran-designed hotel first combined Asian fusion decor and feng shui – now the chain is to open a third outpost. Subtle improvements continue to be made – the bathrooms have been refreshed over the last year – but the essentials remain: an aquarium (with an odd number of fish) and floral arrangements in the calming lobby, strategically placed crystals and scented candles, a wonderfully chill library in the cellared basement. Rooms are minimalist, but exoticised (think buddha heads and south-east Asian furnishings) and fully accessorised (plasma screens, Wi-Fi). The top-floor myspace is a fabulous self-contained apartment and studio – retrofuturist to a tee, and with access to a private rooftop terrace with great views. If you overdo things at the buzzy street-level bar, Jinja (Shinto for ‘shrine’) offers treatments. The website offers weekend rates, sometimes as low as £125; myhotel chelsea is less urban.
