Clink Hostel
With the newer of its two main buildings due to open by early 2008, the impressive, imposing Clink is well ahead of the field as far as London hostels are concerned – for style, comfort, facilities and, above all, setting. A 300-year-old courthouse where Dickens once scribbled and the Clash stood before the beak, the Clink was taken over by the management of Ashlee House and converted into a contemporary lodging for up to 500 backpackers, 300 in the older wing opened in summer 2007. The lobby, a listed building (even the ‘Quiet, Please’ notice) gives on to two beautiful, wood-panelled courtroom-cum-communal areas. The dormitory floors are done out in a handy colour code that is repeated on funky bed steps (designed in-house). The beds, based on the increasingly popular Japanese pods, are sectioned off for privacy, with a reading light and little safety box above each. Natural light and a view of the King’s Cross skyline, broken by St Pancras’s spire, are a feature wherever you sleep.
