‘I Survived the Generator’ beermugs, ‘Boy Meets Girl’ G-strings and Polaroids of people mooning on the noticeboard greet you – backpackers come here for a purpose. This is where Club 18-30 meets youth hostel, a large building set back from the main road, done out in Hacienda-style industrial: steel surfaces, exposed pipes and neon signs. Drinking contests, happy house or karaoke nights, and hangover breakfasts are par for the course, making guests oblivious to the sometimes surly staff and otherwise sombre surroundings. There’s also a movie lounge, travel agent, shop, internet room and kitchen.
