Hazlitt’s

Three Georgian townhouses comprise this charming place, named after William Hazlitt, the spirited 18th-century essayist, critic and philosopher who lodged (and died in abject poverty) here. Now it provides your best chance to enjoy an upmarket version of the Soho accommodation of his period. In the superior double front rooms, it’s easy to imagine the child prodigy Mozart strolling home with his dad after a recital: they also lodged on Frith Street on the composer’s introduction to England in 1765. Quieter standard doubles are at the back of the house. All the rooms are individual, named after various great writers, with fireplaces, superb carved wooden four-posters and half-testers, free-standing bathtubs and handsome cast-iron Shanks toilet cisterns. It gets creakier and more crooked the higher you go, culminating in enchanting garret single rooms (also very comfortable) with rooftop views. Air-conditioning, web TV hidden in antique cupboards and triple-glazed windows come as standard. There’s no house restaurant or bar, but then you have all of Soho to enjoy just outside the front door.
