Cumberland
Perfectly located by Marble Arch tube (turn the right way and you’re there in seconds), the Cumberland is a bit of a monster. There are 900 rooms, plus another 119 in an annexe just down the road, and a huge, echoing lobby with dramatic, large-scale modern art, wall panels that change colour through the day and a somewhat severe waterfall sculpture. The rooms are minimalist, with acid-etched headboards, neatly modern bathrooms and plasma TVs – nicely designed, but rather small. The hotel’s excellent modern British dining room is the exclusive Rhodes W1 opened in spring 2007, but there are also a pricey brasserie with attached cocktail bar, and a boisterous late-night DJ bar Carbon, with its trash-industrial decor. On a weekend, breakfast can feel a little like the feeding of the 5,000.
