Sherlock Holmes Hotel

How do you transform a dreary, chintz-filled Hilton into a hip boutique hotel? It’s elementary: hype up the Baker Street address, banish the bland decor and create a sleek lobby bar. That’s what the Park Plaza chain did when it snapped up the Sherlock Holmes a few years ago. Guests can mingle with local office workers in the casually chic bar, which extends to a lounge in the style of a glossed-up gentlemen’s club and an organic restaurant. The rooms, meanwhile, resemble hip bachelor pads: beige and brown colour scheme, leather headboards, pinstripe scatter cushions and spiffy bathrooms. Split-level ‘loft’ suites take advantage of the first floor’s double-height ceilings. There’s a decent gym with sauna, steam rooms and beauty treatments, and the inevitable memorabilia ranges from expressionist paintings of Holmes and Watson to magnifying glasses.
