Hempel
Suave in low-lit creams and soft beiges, the Hempel remains a bastion of the minimalism espoused by original designer Anouska Hempel, despite being sold in 2005 and given something of a shake-up. The new owners have attempted to cultivate an air of extreme exclusivity, courting celebrities and their lackeys with two new bars and wildly luxurious fittings (like Pour rugs at £10,000 a pop, Zents bathroom products, even canned minibar oxygen). They’ve kept such features as the bed suspended from the ceiling by iron bars (in the ‘Lioness’s Den’), but completely refitted all rooms, primarily with sleek modern Italian furnishings. The effect may be a little constrained – rooms can seem a bit formal – but the quality of the package wins through. Plans for the coming year include a spa – we can’t wait.
