Miller’s Residence
This gloriously atmospheric pad, hidden behind an unmarked door in an unprepossessing side street, is a cross between a baronial family pile and a Portobello arcade. It’s owned by antiques expert Martin Miller (who set up Miller’s Antiques price guides back in the 1960s), and furnished with his finds, with chandeliers, antique vases and cabinets of curios at every turn. Rooms, some featuring four-poster beds, may be named after 19th-century poets, but they come with 21st-century perks such as air-conditioning and CD and DVD players (there’s a large DVD library in reception). The drawing room, where a generous breakfast buffet is laid out in the morning, is an Aladdin’s cave of artefacts; it’s even more atmospheric in the evenings, when it’s highly conducive to relaxing by the elaborately carved fireplace with a whisky from the free bar. In keeping with the authenticity and age of the place, there’s no lift. There’s also no restaurant, but you’ve got plenty of choice right on the doorstep.
