Portobello Hotel
Now equipped with a lift to help guests scale the four floors after taking advantage of the 24hr bar, this decadent Notting Hill mansion has been hosting stars from Kate Moss to Van Morrison for nearly 40 years. All rooms are stylishly equipped with a large fan, tall house plants and round-the-clock room service. Most overlook a pretty rose garden. The spectacular beds range from a Balinese four-poster to a ship’s bunk and a couple of seductive oriental affairs that resemble Berber tents. In many rooms the Victorian bathtubs take centre stage, including one with a Victorian ‘bathing machine’. Alice Cooper used his tub to house his boa constrictor, which he fed with white mice from the local pet shop. Other themed pads include the beguiling Moroccan Room, strewn with carpets and cushions, and the serene Japanese Water Garden Room with an elaborate spa bath, buddhas and its own private grotto.
