Garden Court Hotel
Run by the same family since the 1950s, in a grand place built in the 1850s, this budget hotel has been brought bang up to date with the installation of a lift and an airy lounge with wooden floors and brown leather sofas facing the fireplace. It also has a bit of character: a giant antique Beefeater statue stands guard in the lobby, and the cheery bedrooms have modish modern wallpaper. As the name suggests, the hotel has a small walled garden; guests have access to the private square too.
