Pavilion
In a row of dowdy hotels between Paddington and Hyde Park, the Pavilion is a shining star. Or more like a disco ball. This B&B is as kitsch as its famous guests Duran Duran, Jarvis Cocker and numerable contestants from Pop Idol. The rooms are a riot: the Highland Fling is a tartan theme park, with plaid bedspreads and stag antlers; Better Red Than Dead is an extravaganza of crimson, vermilion and burgundy. A favoured shag pad is Honky Tonk Afro with its mirror ball, fuzzy dice and heart-shaped mirrored headboards. OK, so the location’s not exactly rocking and the bathrooms are small, but there’s more personality in this humble budget hotel than in many of the capital’s big-name boutiques.
