Having just spent £1m on expansion (they now offer a six-person luxury duplex for £350 a night), the Vancouver is still ahead of the game in this lodging-dense location. Staying here feels more like renting a small flat than putting up in a hotel. The fresh, unfussy studios are equipped with kitchenettes, flatscreen TVs and DVD players. The sitting room, which guests share with two resident cats, is cosy and funky, with Mexican upholstery, cacti and an old-fashioned gramophone. It opens on to a lush, walled garden with a gurgling fountain. There are also handy on-site facilities such as a laundry room, and free wireless internet for laptop-carrying guests. If you get lost in the interlinked Prince’s and Leinster Squares, look out for twin red phone boxes on the Bayswater Road side of this quiet locality.
