Brown’s
Brown’s was opened in 1837 by Lord Byron’s butler, James Brown, and became the quintessential Mayfair hotel. The first British telephone call was made from here in 1876, five years after Napoleon III and Empress Eugenie took refuge in one of the suites after fleeing the Third Republic. Franklin Roosevelt, Haile Selassie and Rudyard Kipling have all been guests. Kipling wrote the Jungle Book here and now has a suite named in his honour. In 2003 the Rocco Forte Collection acquired the place and gave it a £24m top-to-toe refurbishment. The public spaces resonate history – non-residents can visit the English Tea Room by the lobby, with its original wood panelling, fireplaces and Jacobean plaster ceilings for afternoon tea (3-6pm, £35). The Donovan Bar, named after 1960s snapper Terence Donovan, is sheer class, and the Grill offers traditional British cuisine with a modern twist. All 117 bedrooms, super-large and extremely comfortable, have been reconfigured, kept in character with original artwork, book collections and, in the suites, fireplaces.
