Claridge’s
Claridge’s is synonymous with history and class, its decorative character linked to its 1898 reopening and signature art deco redesign. Photographs of Churchill and the arrival of sundry royals grace the grand entrance. While remaining traditional, its bars and restaurant are actively fashionable – Gordon Ramsay offers contemporary French cuisine in his restaurant and A-listers gather in the Claridge’s bar. The Fumoir has, they say, the country’s largest selection of Macanudo cigars – although, since the smoking ban of 2007, you’ll have to smoke them elsewhere. The rooms divide equally between deco original and Victorian, with period touches such as deco toilet flushes in the swanky marble bathrooms. Bedside panels control the mod-con facilities at the touch of a button. A private butler serves the penthouse suites (yours for £5,000 a night), with several bedrooms, bathrooms and a private terrace.
