Dorchester
A glitzy Park Lane fixture since 1931, the Dorchester is enjoying its first major upgrade since a complete refurbishment in 2002. The Alain Ducasse team of Nicola Canuti and Bruno Riou launched a restaurant here in November 2007, a month after the reopening of Alexandra Champalimaud’s redesigned trio of rooftop suites, all marble and glass-beaded wall-paper. The view over Hyde Park from the expansive terrace is the same one Elizabeth Taylor would have seen when she agreed to star in Cleopatra – she took the call here. Of the 49 other suites, General Eisenhower planned the D-Day landings in one and Prince Philip held his stag-do in another. This opulence is reflected in the grandest lobby in town, complete with Liberace’s piano. The hotel continually upgrades older rooms to the same high standard as the rest, with floral decor, antiques and lavish marble bathrooms; some have park views. The Dorchester employs 90 full-time chefs – both China Tang and the Grill Room live up to their reputations. At the other end of the price scale, the revamped spa is affordable for non-residents.
