Ritz
Founded by hotelier extraordinaire César Ritz, the hotel celebrated its centenary in 2006 and remains the epitome of luxury. Recently embellished by the addition of the adjoining 18th-century Grade-II listed William Kent House and its five lavish reception rooms, the Ritz echoes this grandeur in its public areas, rooms and suites. The real show-stopper is the ridiculously ornate, vaulted Long Gallery, an orgy of chandeliers, rococo mirrors and marble columns – jackets are compulsory for gentlemen, naturally, although this rule is lifted for breakfast. The high-ceilinged, Louis XVI-style bedrooms have been painstakingly renovated to their former glory in a range of restrained pastel colours. Less restrained are the swanky 24-carat gold leaf features and the magnificently heavy curtains. Amid this old-world luxury, mod cons include wireless internet, large TVs and a gym. Tours are even available, as is a fine afternoon tea served in the Palm Court.
