Trafalgar
The Trafalgar is a Hilton – but you’d hardly notice. It is the chain’s first ‘concept’ hotel. Although it’s housed in one of the imposing edifices on the famous square (the former Cunard HQ, in fact, where the ill-fated Titanic was conceived), the mood is young and dynamic. The rooms (all of which are a good size) have a masculine feel, with minimalist walnut furniture and white or chocolate walls. The bathtubs are made for sharing with the tap in the middle, and full-size, bespoke, aromatherapy-based toiletries are a nice touch. Just to the right of the open reception on the ground floor is the Rockwell Bar, which serves a brilliant selection of bourbon and mixes cocktails for every taste. DJs play every night, with things getting pretty fierce of a weekend – although thick walls should ensure no sound escapes to the bedrooms. Breakfast downstairs is accompanied each morning by a different musician, ranging from Latin American bossa guitarist to a harpist. Yet even with all these attractions, it is the none-more-central location that’s the biggest draw – the few corner suites look directly into the square (prices reflect location) and, during summer or Christmas opening times, those without a room view can enjoy themselves from the small rooftop champagne bar.
