Halkin

The first hotel of Singaporean fashion magnate Christina Ong (whose COMO group also includes the Metropolitan) was ahead of the East-meets-West design trend when it opened in 1991. Repeat custom accounts for more than half of its trade. Its subtle design – a marriage of European luxury and oriental serenity – looks more current than hotels half its age. The 41 rooms, located off curving black corridors, combine stylish classical sofas with black lacquer tables and South-east Asian artefacts. Each floor is loosely themed by element, influencing the colour of the carpets and the marble bathrooms. Egyptian cotton sheets are common throughout. A high-tech touch-screen bedside console controls everything from the ‘do not disturb’ sign to the air-con. Gracious and discreet behind a Georgian-style façade, Halkin is equally renowned for its Michelin-starred restaurant, Nahm.
