Gore
Recently refurbished and now under new management, the Gore retains a special atmosphere. It’s a fin-de-siècle period piece founded by descendants of Captain Cook in a couple of grand Victorian townhouses. The lobby and staircase are close hung with old paintings, and the bedrooms have fantastic 19th-century carved oak beds, sumptuous drapes and shelves of old books. The suites are spectacular: the Tudor Room has a huge stone-faced fireplace and a minstrels’ gallery, while tragedy queens should plump for the Venus room and Judy Garland’s old bed (and replica ruby slippers). Bistrot 190 gets good reviews, and provides a casually elegant setting for great breakfasts, while the warm, wood-pannelled 190 bar has a salubrious charm. It’s recently been enhanced by the arrival of Cinderella’s Carriage, a red velvet bedecked snug bookable on guarantee of a minimum £100 spend. Hyde Park, the Royal Albert Hall and the museums are all just a short walk away.
