This classy German hostel chain’s first London operation is set in the large conference centre for the Scouts’ Association, which still owns this modern, six-storey building opposite the Natural History Museum, opened by the Queen in 1961. With its purple colour scheme and artwork an appreciative nod to the movement, which hires out the events rooms, the lodging quarters have had a complete makeover: the breakfast room has an expansive view of London traffic and its equally large second-floor terrace is equipped with benches and a table-tennis table. The three main floors offer airy dormitory, twin and single accommodation, all bedrooms en suite with TV, wireless access and air-conditioning, as well as bedside tables and lamps. The more basic dorms are on the top floor. Families and big groups are welcome – children are safely catered for. Self-catering or bar, but there is 24hr tea and coffee provision for both communal and single or twin rooms.
