If you’re looking for somewhere to stay while your new home is being renovated, you could slip between the sheets in the same room that Freud did in 1938 while awaiting the move into what would be his final address. These days, the former Esplanade Hotel goes by a new name, and a mezzanine has been added to the high-ceilinged Freud Suite, but this handsome double-fronted Victorian mansion just north of optimistically named Little Venice retains its old-school charm. The lobby is suffused with rich autumn colours – russet carpet, brown leather chairs, forest-green drapes – and the pricier rooms are opulent but not overly fussy, with plush carpets, stuffed armchairs, gilt-framed mirrors, thick duvets and bright, decent-sized bathrooms. Unfortunately, those colour and texture combinations make some of the lower-ceilinged standard doubles feel a bit oppressive; toned-down furnishings in the single rooms work better. Breakfast (£10-£15) is served in the glass-topped tapas bar and cocktail lounge sunk in the front garden.
