Hampstead Village Guesthouse
Popular with visiting academics and their families, this comfy bed and breakfast occupies a Victorian pile in picturesque Hampstead. This is the place to stay if you hate hotels – the nine guest rooms in Annemarie van der Meer’s sprawling home contain an eclectic collection of furniture, paintings and books… it’s like staying in the spare room of an intellectual relative (one who’ll lend you a mobile or a laptop, mind). Space is used to maximum effect, with quirky devices – children love the wardrobe that conceals a fold-out bed. There’s a fridge in each room and most of the rooms are en suite (although some bathrooms are tiny); one even has a steel tub in the middle of the floor. There’s also a modern studio in a converted garage, sleeping five. Breakfast is served in the kitchen or secluded garden.
