Hoxton Hotel
The Hoxton Hotel proves that budget needn’t be boring. Opened in September 2006, it is a perfect fit for its hip Shoreditch location. The large glass front wall maintains a link between the activity out on the street and the busy double-height foyer with its areas of lounge seating grouped around two fires – a kind of postmodern country lodge. A large and well-designed bar and restaurant – visible to passers-by and open to the public – lends a genuine air of excitement to the place. The rooms aren’t big, but they are well thought out – the flatscreen TV turns to a cheekily tiny chaise longue or the Frette linen bed, free internet, a free Pret Lite breakfast, fresh milk in the fridge. Grab a room at the back on the fifth or sixth floor and you’ll be blessed with great urban views at night; otherwise all rooms are identical. It’s doubtful you’ll get a better deal in London – especially if you manage to book one of the few £1 rooms released every three months.
