Church Street Hotel
Craftsman José Raido and his Galician family are behind this attractive and original new hotel, opened in summer 2007. It’s near the busy bus junction of Camberwell Green, right on the frontier of London’s Latin American quarter. Avoiding the temptation to give their premises a hokey Spanish name, José and his team have gone big on the detail within. All the funky bathroom tiles in the bright, high-ceilinged bedrooms, for example, came from Guadalajara, perfectly matched with imported cinema posters and other Mexicana. The Somerset bed frames were forged by José himself. Bathroom products are from the Greek Korres range – organic, like the pastries and cereals offered for breakfast in an icon-filled dining room that also serves as 24hr honesty bar. Even those paying £70-£90 for the shared-bathroom ‘Poblito’ rooms are entitled to breakfast and an eyeful of bright design. Tea and coffee are complimentary, while the small jars of hot pepper dip in each room come courtesy of José’s father. A downstairs restaurant is due soon.
