Base2Stay
Opened in spring 2006, Base2Stay looks good, with its modernist limestone and taupe tones. It claims to offer ‘a synthesis of boutique hotel and serviced apartment’ and the prices are certainly agreeable, so where have the corners been cut? The answer is simple: frills. The ‘kitchenette’ that supposedly dispenses with the need for a hotel bar or dining area is a microwave, sink, mini-fridge and kettle squeezed into a cupboard in the bedroom – but given there’s nowhere but the bed for more than one person to sit, you’ll probably want to take advantage of the small discounts offered at nearby restaurants (20% at Strada, 10% at Wagamama). Not that the rooms are disagreeable, with cream walls, taupe and chocolate accents, and sepia print photos; the first-floor rooms have ridiculously high ceilings and the bunk bed rooms are great for kids. As long as you don’t mind the lack of perks, you get an affordable room less than five minutes from the tube station.
