Turn the corner from North Ealing tube, past the pleasant Greystoke pub and up to Hanger Lane and a surprise awaits at this junction of bucolic west London and traffic-choked North Circular. Where there was once the prosaic Glencairn Hotel, a popular stop for lonely truck drivers, is now the contemporary, design-led Hotel 55. True, it ticks the boxes of many of London’s other contemporary, design-led hotels – Molton Brown bath products, sheets of Egyptian cotton, 24hr lounge bar – but considering the price and location, this is no bad thing at all. Individuality is provided by the modern canvases of Indian artist Sudhir Deshpande, the natural woods integral to the design of Babettli Azzone, and a lovely landscaped garden.
