Great Eastern Hotel
Once a faded railway hotel, the Great Eastern has been reborn. Thanks to a £70m overhaul by Sir Terence Conran, it’s now a mammoth, urban style mecca, though one whose design is well thought out and sympathetic to its glorious Victorian building. Close to the City and the hipster districts of Shoreditch and Hoxton, the hotel attracts a mixture of suits and style mavens; in the lobby, copies of the Financial Times sit alongside avant-garde art. The six-storey atrium, overlooking a Zen rock garden lounge, is a show stopper. The bedrooms wear the regulation style mag uniform: Eames chairs, chocolate shagpile rugs and white Frette linens. And you’ll never go hungry or thirsty here. The hotel has four bars, including a swanky new champagne bar and the atmospheric George, a faux-Elizabethan pub. Restaurants include the mandatory Japanese joint, a fish restaurant and the lovely Aurora, with its elegant stained-glass dome.
