Covent Garden Hotel
In Kit Kemp’s mini empire of design hotels, the Covent Garden is the most showbiz in both look and atmosphere. For one thing, it’s in the heart of theatreland. Film stars and Hollywood executives attend screenings in the basement cinema (which also shows classics for guests every Saturday night - you can call ahead to get a programme of upcoming movies). And the decor, too, is much more flamboyant. Kemp’s distinctive modern English style is a bold mix: traditional stuff - pinstriped wallpaper, floral upholstery - with a contemporary twist. The comfy bedrooms have two Kemp trademarks: upholstered mannequins and shiny granite and oak bathrooms. The restaurant is unremarkable, but the clubby library, with its pink plaid couches, is striking. Snuggle up by the fire with a drink and - if you’re lucky - a Hollywood heart-throb.
