Lanesborough
It may not be a household name, but the Lanesborough matches the Ritz for sheer unbridled luxury. It’s got plenty of period grandeur: magnificent Regency architecture, a marble neo-classical lobby, and the domed Conservatory restaurant, a swish tribute to the Brighton Pavilion. But it’s the decadence that boggles the mind: the Library Bar serves vintage cognac for £750 a swill; the Royal Suite (£5,000) comes with a chauffeur-driven Bentley and round-the-clock security guards. The regular bedrooms are a lavish combination of mahogany, period furniture and cutting-edge technology; butlers are available at your beck and call (they once filled Michael Jackson’s bathtub with 28 bottles of Evian). New this year is a spa and gym, complete with plasma-screen TVs on each piece of equipment. If you’ve got money to burn, the Lanesborough will spoil you rotten.
