City Inn Westminster

The City Inn opened to a great fanfare in 2003: it’s London’s largest new hotel in 40 years and its modern design has won several awards. But, apart from the blue, Lego-like exterior, don’t expect anything flashy. The airy lobby has a clean, contemporary look, adorned with the odd piece of modern art. The bedrooms incorporate the usual minimalist schtick - white sheets, neutral colours - but they’re not stark. There’s an emphasis on natural light - some rooms have floor-to-ceiling windows - and comfort: beds boast a selection of different pillows; walls are 18 in thick so you can’t hear the neighbours whooping it up. The Millbank Bar, with its glam red sofas and dim lighting, recalls the Met Bar, but without the attitude - an apt summary of the hotel itself.
