Long Bar, Sanderson hotel

A noughties makeover by Philippe Starck and Denton Corker Marshall Architects turned the Grade II-listed Sanderson building – designed as the headquarters of the Sanderson textiles, wallpaper and paint manufacturers in 1958 – into a statement hotel. The design throughout is a combination of clinical chic – flowing white net drapes, gleaming glass cabinets and retractable screens – and Starck's quirky take on the baroque. The residents-only Purple Bar sports a button-backed purple leather ceiling. The billiard room has a purple-topped pool table, surrounded by tribal adaptations of classic dining room furniture. The building usually opens to the public as part of Open House London in September.
