  • The botanical gardens have much more to offer families than a pleasant setting for a walk. There's the aquarium downstairs in the Palm House, a human-scale badger sett to explore and plants that eat insects or produce the raw material for chocolate to lure kids into the glasshouses. Best of all for children too young to be impressed by the 30,000 species of plants to be found at Kew is Climbers and Creepers, a great plant-themed indoor play area for accompanied three-to-nine year-olds (sessions, bookable on arrival, last 20 mins).

I think John must have been having a bad day. my family and I spend alot of time at Kew Gardens - yes we are that breed of 'offensive' SW Londeners he refers to. Sadly no kids called Honey though - what's wrong with that name anyway? Kew Gardens is a lovely day or half day out - plenty of opportunity to picnic if you don't want to, or can't pay the restaurant prices. The children have plenty of opportunity to charge around as well as get invilved in activities. Ignore John he's clearly just grumpy - better off staring in til you feel a better I think John!

Have your say
