Petr Horácek trained at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague before becoming a graphic designer and the illustrations in his new picture book are gorgeous. The intense colours and plashy brush stokes bring to mind the distinctive collages created from hand-coloured papers by Eric Carle, author and illustrator of ‘The Very Hungry Caterpillar’. ‘Look Out Suzy Goose’, with its animal sounds and frisson of danger unseen, is perfect to read aloud, though perhaps not to a child going through a check-under-the-bed phase.
