Illustrated by Gwen Millward, 'The Bog Baby' explores the poignant pleasure of seeing our own early experiences mirrored in our children’s. Instead of going straight to their friend’s house to play, the book’s narrator and her sister set out to find the pond in the woods that only appears in the spring rains. There they discover a strange, sweet creature which they carry home, only to experience the anguish of guilt when it becomes ill. Longing for adult help, they eventually own up to their out-of-bounds excursion and it turns out that once, long ago, their mother too succumbed to the lure of the bluebell wood.
