Sport is a deadly serious business these days. Which is why we're looking forward to The Tranny Olympics
Let's face it. Not everyone is a fan of sport. Now that the Olympic Games are under way, you may be feeling a little left out, a little alienated, even - dare we say it? - a little bored. But fear not. Hope has arrived, and it's wearing slingbacks.
The fifth annual Tranny Olympics takes place this Saturday. The brainchild of Polly Sexual and Babes Trust, the event was originally created to draw attention to gender testing in the Olympic Games. It has since developed into an annual celebration of queer performers and continues to support artists, musicians, drag kings and queens in London and beyond. In five years the Tranny Olympics has hosted similar events in Berlin, Stockholm and New York.
According to the organisers, this year's event will be 'an unforgettable celebration of the sheer stamina, nerve and talent of east London's trans nightlife Olympians.' There'll be performances from Horrorchata, Polly Sexual, Babes Trust, Svetlana Pall Mall, Holestar and Stephanie Carter. DJs include London's own Princess Julia and New York's Sky Mall and Adidi.
Contestants will be drawn from across the whole spectrum of gender identities. There'll be occasional cross dressers, drag queens, drag kings, bearded ladies, trannies and everyone in between. Games include the voguing-inspired Throwing Shade, the meat and dairy-free Vegan Eating Contest, Lip Sync for Your Life and the Tranny Wet T-Shirt Competition.
This is one sporting event where the UK is certain to take home gold.
London 2012 - The (Real) Tranny Olympics is on Sat Aug 4 at Bethnal Green Working Men's Club
