World Pride was a damp squib. Thank heavens for Summer Rites
Lovebox Sunday rocked. World Pride flopped. Now it's time for the third and final gay outdoor festival of the year. Yes, Summer Rites is back. The brainchild of club promoter Wayne Shires (Substation, Crash, East Bloc), the first event was held way back in 1998 in Brockwell Park. Subsequent years saw performances from the likes of Marc Almond and Siouxsie Sioux.
Fourteen years after it first began, the one-day festival is now held in Shoreditch Park, and this year's lineup looks pretty impressive. On the main stage, there'll be performances from headliner Mutya, as well as David McAlmont, Boy George, Adamski, Amanda Lepore, Cazwell,Trannyshack, Bitches With Wolves, Feral is Kinky, Bright Light Bright, Twins, I Am A Camera, Jonny Woo, Warboy, UTurns, Massive Ego, ENV and Sam Le Mans.
There'll be a total of six club tents, reflecting the diversity of London's queer club scene. Bears can feel the heat at XXL, urban boys and girls can shake their thing at Bootylicious, muscle boys can strike a pose at Room Service and East End hipsters can choose between Dalston Superstore, Dish, Gutterslut, Ponystep, War and the George & Dragon.
Plus there's a funfair hosted by clubs Carpet Burn and Push The Button, with dodgems and DJs Hits & Mrs, Jonny Kalifornia and Martyn Fitzgerald.
Other DJs for the day include Ariel, Sister Bliss, Dan Beaumont, Biggy C, Kris Di Angelis, Joe Egg, Jodie Harsh, Jeffrey Hinton, Jonny Kalifornia, Mikki Most, Neil Prince, Per QX and Severino. Plus there'll be Gay Bingo, the Tranny Detention Centre and surprise PAs throughout the day.
The park has a capacity of 10,000 and tickets are a snip at £25 if you book in advance. What are you waiting for?
Summer Rites Festival 2012 is on Sun Sept 2 at Shoreditch Park.
