The Big Gay 10K
The Big Gay 10K is part sponsored walk, part queer village fête. And it's for charity
Many of you have probably taken part in sponsored walks. But how about a gay sponsored walk ending with a queer twist on the village fête? The Big Gay 10K - surely worth signing up for on the strength of that name alone - takes place this Sunday and promises to be at least 10,000 times livelier and more colourful than your average charity walk-a-thon.
Kicking off at Vauxhall Pleasure Gardens, next to the legendary Royal Vauxhall Tavern, the ten-kilometre walk will take in many of the city's sights including the Houses of Parliament, where the girls are rumoured to be planning to take a brief break for a giant 'smooch-a-thon'. The organisers assure us that the route is fully accessible to all walkers, runners, wheelchair users, people with pushchairs and those who prefer to think of themselves as 'stray mincers', so there's no reason for you to not pop on some trainers and a feather boa and join in the fun.
Then it's all back to the Vauxhall Pleasure Gardens for the part of the day we're most excited about - 'The Big Gay Village Fête'. There'll be performances from acts including wickedly funny comedian Zoe Lyons and the extraordinary 'queer, feminist, working-class one-man band' Ste McCabe. The last time we saw Ste perform he launched into an attack on all the world's major religions: this should be a fête not for the faint-hearted…
That said, there'll also be many of the things associated with a traditional village get-together, including enticing stalls, games and everybody's favourite, the coconut shy. Plus there will be a tarot reader, a bearded-lady bingo caller and 'cream teas made with lesbian jam' (we're assuming this is jam made by lesbians).
Assemble at 11am on the day for a noon warm-up. But first register for free online and encourage friends and family to donate money via JustGiving. All funds raised will be divided between London LGBT charities Pace and London Friend.
So not only will you be treating yourself to a great gay day out, you'll also be supporting two very worthwhile causes.
