Continuing its exploration of empire and power started with the blockbuster exhibitions on the Terracotta Army and Hadrian, the museum turns its focus to the Iranian king and military leader Shah 'Abbas, who came to the throne in 1587. His legacy is explored in a collection of gold-ground carpets, delicate Chinese porcelain, illustrated manuscripts and watercolour paintings, many of which have never before been shown outside Iran.
