Masterpieces of cartography from 200AD to the present, many of which have never been shown before, make up the BL's major summer exhibition. Reflecting a huge variety of world views over the centuries, the show looks at the way that maps can be works of art - intended for display alongside paintings and sculptures - as well as vehicles for propaganda and indoctrination. Highlights include a hand-drawn copy of the first great modern world map, the 'Fra Mauro World Map' (1450), made in 1804 for the British East India Company, 'The Klencke Atlas' (1660), the largest book in the world, intended to be a summary of the world's knowledge, and Pierre Desceliers' 1550 world map, which celebrates discoveries in Canada and shows the myths, animals and natural history of respective countries
