An installation in the foyer and windows by German artist Sigune Hamann. Featuring still and moving images of waving figures - capturing moments of joy, friendship, heartbreak and curiosity -the installation is a constantly evolving montage. Hamann's interest in the range of meanings and feelings a wave can suggest was inspired, in part, by the artist coming across a collection of 1950s photographs of Berliners waving to relatives across the newly-erected Berlin Wall, a practice soon declared illegal by the East German authorities. Images shown include footage of British soldiers leaving a French harbour during WWI, a figure afloat on debris in the aftermath of the Japanese tsunami in 2011 and hands emerging through train windows, recording the goodbyes of children evacuated from cities during the Blitz.
