While there are some historical artefacts - a revolver carried by Archduke Franz Ferdinand's assassins being the most notable - In Memoriam prioritises the intimate, offering a wealth and weight of personal exhibits documenting the impact of the war on the individual. From the opening room, which features quotes, and images of the only three surviving British soldiers from the war, one of whom is still too traumatised to talk about his experiences, the cumulative affect is one of extraordinary pathos, as tragedy compounds tragedy.
