  • Got what it takes to work at the coldest, windiest, most remote place on earth? Opening at the Natural History Museum on Friday, ‘Ice Station Antarctica’ is an interactive family exhibition developed in partnership with the British Antarctic Survey as part of International Polar Year (2007/8) and designed to sort out out which of its visitors are made of stern enough stuff to undertake the rigours of research in the Antarctic.

‘Every year, hundreds of scientists and staff travel towards the South Pole, braving harsh conditions and freezing temperatures,’ says exhibition developer Alex Gaffikin. ‘It’s a tough job. I should know, having worked there myself.’

Best suited to children of seven upwards, the exhibition will involve tackling a variety of challenges, from enduring the stench of a penguin colony to working out how to walk in multiple layers of special insulating clothing. Also on offer are lunch in the dark to get an idea of the 24-hour darkness of a polar winter and a chance to experience life in a tent: melting ice for cooking and washing, and extremely basic toilet facilities. You can definitely count me out of that, but kids will love it.

Have your say
