This pub-cum-legendary queer performance venue operates an insistently eclectic booking policy and attracts a mixed crowd. Gloriously faded, a bit louche and with a colourful past (the gay Kray used to drink here, Regina Fong held court and Lily Savage got her start behind the bar), the RVT just keeps surviving. The most famous fixture is Saturday’s seminal queer performance club night Duckie, with Amy Lamé hosting turns that range from live art to porn puppets; other staples include the Sunday show from the DE Experience, Timberlina's Monday bingo night, ultra-inclusive performance mixer Wotever on Tuedays and regular runs from the legendary David Hoyle. It's also home to the Hot August Fringe festival. The aim is to please the crowd of regulars, who are reliably vocal in their feedback, and entice a broad range of newcomers.

Tuesday queer night is friendly, fun and fabulous. I’ve been in tears of joy, recognition, & awe. The audience are so tolerant and friendly - to each other and the performers. I’ve gone by myself, chatted to strangers and it’s been fun. The audience is as mixed as the performers, all genders, all ages, all sexual orientations imaginable, and a good London mix of ethnicities. Most of the time its free entry and a safe space for queer performers to develop their acts, and every now and again they have a paid showcase of their best performers. A great night out alone or with friends.

After almost twenty years on the london gay scene. I have to admit the royal vauxhall tavern is the friendliest venue i have been to. Regulars well at least some of them recognise you and acknowledge you. S,l.a.g.s on sunday is just a perfect treat for the afternoon.
