Not your standard kind of book club, thankfully, but a much livelier affair. Housed in a big-windowed former warehouse, this bar opened a few years ago to provide the fun-seeking youngsters of Shoreditch with booze, food and amusing diversions.
The programme of events includes film nights, talks and discussions, console playing, speed-dating, life-drawing and ‘London’s most outrageous ping pong party’, which sounds a bit like what you might find in Bangkok. If you end up fishing a ping pong ball out of your pint glass here, however, it’s probably just bounced through from the table in the annexe.
Most of the esoteric entertainment takes place in a separate room downstairs, so you can just pop in for a drink. The cocktails are fun, and many come in big jugs for sharing. A few more local beers would be welcome – aside from London Fields Brewery, they’re largely unexciting. Much of the food comes on platters to share, too: mezze, cured meats and so on.
Although it can sometimes feel like Movember all year round in this area, TBC is a friendly and laid-back sort of place (apart from an almost comically grumpy barman) – and it’s much more salubrious than some of its neighbours.
