A Brixton institution from back when Coldharbour Lane was somewhere people feared to go, Dogstar is a big, three-floor street-corner pub exuding the urban authenticity loved by clubbers. Earning the accolade of being London’s first ever DJ bar, Dogstar has managed to sustain a loyal following over the decades. The most recent refurbishment has left the interior looking like a cross between the Old Blue Last and Loungelover. The atmosphere can be intense, but it’s never less than vibrant. A top tip for first-timers is to get there early – not only will you be able to bag space at the pool table but you can also evade the door tax. Dogstar’s music policy is varied with everything from hip hop to drum ’n’ bass and funk. There are often comedy nights and the food from the Mexican restaurant is popular with locals.

After 20 or so years you'd think this place would have decreased in popularity - but it hasn't. Returned last weekend twice - once for the usual roadblock dance party on Fridays and for the David Bowie party after the Academy event. The place is still the scruffy Dog I've loved over the years - one that isn't the pop-up, over priced operation - so ubiquitous in the neighborhood these days - instead a lovely old boozer [I think they've done up the outside recently] with pub prices and DJs on the weekend; add pizza, comedy, markets, everything like that - and its still a local hub. The one thing I have to say is the security, staff when its at is busiest - like any other nightclub in London - has new rules - see Fabric for example - don't forget your photo ID - nor can they let you in [and this applies to all big venues in London] and don't drink in the Q. If the staff seem like they're yelling at you - a clue might be at the far end of the bar where the DJ is playing - no doubt its a loud venue - they're not screaming at you :) Summary - Love this place - and not for someone looking for a sparkler on a bottle. This is the real deal. Not pretentious nor flash - just one of the best nights out in the city.
Had a good enough time until a rude staff member started yelling abuse at me and my friend. We did nothing to her but she just wanted to pick a fight. She kick us out but then security had to restrain her because she was trying to fight me. I don't want to go back to a place where members of staff act like that. On a whole, service is absolutely terrible.
I go here often after work on a friday. Always a great night out - good tunes and friendly people. Love it, highly recommended!
Mega fun night out in very lively Brixton, extremely tasty pizzas, cool staff and party atmosphere later on. Good range of drinks, resonable 'pub' prices!!!
