Bat For Lashes – 'The Haunted Man'
By Kim Taylor Bennett
After the release of 2009’s concept album ‘Two Suns’ Natasha Khan suffered a bout of writer’s block. You might suspect she was feeling the pressure following two Mercury-nominated albums, but the 32-year-old’s third collection does not suggest a trace of struggle. Like a modern-day Kate Bush, Khan’s compositions are sylphlike – her lyrics richly evocative. An expert at balancing light and shade, she offsets brittle beats with orchestral cinematic swells. On ‘Horses of the Sun’ her dark-hearted incantations turn on a dime to become gloriously triumphant. On ‘Deep Sea Diver’ she coos, ‘Baby let your hair down/It’s time to get enchanted’. We couldn’t agree more.
