Efterklang – 'Piramida'
By James Manning
This Danish band spent nine days last August in an abandoned Russian mining settlement on Svalbard, 400 miles north of Norway. While they were there, they captured field recordings of sounds made using bottles, fuel tanks and the world’s northernmost grand piano. Some bands would be happy just to cobble the resulting noises together and dine out on the concept. Efterklang, though, went back to their studio in Berlin, drafted in some session musicians, and made the potent and symphonic ‘Piramida’. Humming with Arctic ambience but founded on solid melody, this is much more than a postcard from a ghost town.
