At 79, the last surviving hero of hard bop is still in fine shape, with daily yoga sessions maintaining his garrulous improvisational style, that characteristic throaty buzz and his seemingly effortless ability to traverse the entire range of the tenor sax. Here the enigmatic saxophone colossus plays from his sparky recent albums on standards and originals with his usual band, who effortlessly switch from calypso to swing to funk and Latin grooves.
