Have 'Green Day' missed a trick with their 'American Idiot' Broadway musical? Sure, creating the tale of a disaffected youth who flees suburbia for the city is one way to do it. But there's a far more interesting tale that the Cali pop-punkers could tell: the story of one lead singer and the intriguing adventures of his hair. It'd start off as a young, springy barnet, optimistic about all the possibilities that lie ahead of an artfully tousled young 'do. Eventually, tweens the world over bow down before its hegemony over all things mini-quiff. Its scruffy dominion lasts the best part of a decade. Then, in 2000, on the promo tour for 'Warning', questions start to be asked about it starting to look like it's been worried by a chihuahua. Album sales drop off markedly, and it retires to a secret salon location to regroup. Then in 2003, upon the release of 'American Idiot', it returns all bushy and unruly, with a colouring seemingly applied with a black marker pen. Wigmakers throughout the land have a new template. Album sales go back through the roof. A few years later, it's playing Wembley, being supported by Joan Jett And The Blackhearts and Frank Turner. Happily ever after, etc. You heard it here first.
