Perhaps the last of the great jazz divas, Dee Dee's scat style is compared to Ella Fitzgerald and her ballads to Sarah Vaughan. While she's worked with the likes of Sonny Rollins, Roland Kirk, Max Roach and Stanley Clarke in the '70s, it's her recent visit to Mali and her exploration of the Griot storytelling traditions that have created the universally acclaimed LP 'Red Earth: A Malian Journey'. Recasting standards like 'Afro Blue' and 'Nature Boy' by using pulsating African polyrhythms and instrumentation, Bridgewater has built new bridges between these two strands of African and American culture. This is her only UK show.
